Scope of Practice

What we treat and what we do not.

Moda Clinic treats sleep and wakefulness conditions by telehealth. This page lists what we treat and what we do not.

It is here so you can check before you fill anything in.

What we treat

Sleep and wakefulness

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy type 2, meaning narcolepsy without cataplexy.
  • Sleepiness that carries on in obstructive sleep apnea after someone has been diagnosed and settled on airway therapy.
  • Shift work sleep disorder.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea itself, including testing for adults who have not been diagnosed yet.

Mood

  • Major depressive disorder in adults who already have the diagnosis. We can confirm one you bring us. We do not make a new one.
  • If you think you may be depressed and have never been assessed, we will refer you to primary care or psychiatry. Making the diagnosis is a different job from managing it.

Treating obesity-related risk

Some adults come to us with severe obesity and screening that points to obstructive sleep apnea. Our Medical Director may start treatment for the risk that obesity carries while testing confirms the apnea.

This happens as part of an airway evaluation. You cannot ask for it on its own, and we do not run a weight-management service.

What we do not treat

ADHD

We do not diagnose or treat ADHD, in adults or in children. Primary care or a psychiatric practice handles it, and starting there will save you a step.

Requests not tied to a diagnosis

We treat conditions. Asking for a particular medication is not the same as having one, and we do not prescribe on request. If you have not been diagnosed with something on the list above, an evaluation here will not get you a prescription.

Anything needing hands-on care

We cannot examine you, order imaging, or do any testing that needs you in a room. When a condition calls for that, we say so and refer you.

Emergencies

We are not an emergency service, and nobody is reading messages overnight. If someone is in danger right now, call 911.

If we turn you down

It means what you need sits outside what we do. Your primary care provider is the usual next step and can refer you on from there.
